The Criminal Division on Friday held its quarterly staff meeting at the Division at the Judiciary Headquarters, Kampala.
The meeting, chaired by Hon. Alex Mackay Ajiji (Deputy Head Criminal Division), who said the meeting aimed to review the performance of the court staff, address challenges, and devise means of improving service delivery at the Division.
Present were: Hon. Justice Paul Gadenya, and Hon. Lady Justice Comfort Kania (Judges at the Criminal Division). The Deputy Registrar, HW Festo Nsenga, and Assistant Registrar, HW Ssalaamu Godfrey Ngobi, were also in attendance, along with staff attached to the Division.
In his remarks, Justice Ajiji emphasized the importance of timekeeping and adhering to Public Service regulations, which require civil servants to work five days a week unless an emergency arises, in which case they must inform their immediate supervisor.
He also urged the staff to identify backlogged cases and those lined up for plea bargains. Additionally, Justice Ajiji informed them of plans to recruit more clerks to assist with the workload.
Justice Gadenya thanked the staff for their efforts and suggested team-building activities to foster good work relations among them, as well as occasional in-house training sessions.
Lady Justice Kania reiterated the importance of timekeeping, stating that litigants should always find support staff ready to assist them. She also urged the staff to avoid corruption, as it tarnishes the Judiciary's reputation.
HW Nsenga called upon clerks to prepare cause-lists promptly, especially those for plea bargaining, to reduce case backlog.
He also urged the staff to work together as a team, fulfill their roles diligently, and maintain punctuality.
HW Ngobi emphasized the importance of punctuality for meetings and work. He encouraged the staff to always inform their immediate supervisors of any challenges they encounter while executing their duties.
